EXEMPTION INFORMATION
If you recently purchased or built a home AND if this is your primary residence, be sure to apply for any exemptions prior to March 1st (i.e. Veterans, , Senior, etc). Call for exemption forms and supporting documentation requirements. All new applications will be processed and applied to next year’s tax bills.

ATTENTION SENIORS
Exemption Renewal Forms are due back with the income documents by March 1st.
Anyone enrolled in the Income Verification Program will receive a letter stating whether or not your income was verified by NYS Department of Taxation & Finance or not. If you were NOT verified, unfortunately, we do not get an explanation from the State as to why. You will be required to bring your income documents to us by the March 1st deadline.

What is the role of an assessor?
The Assessor is a Constitutional office in the Town of Lumberland, and is an appointed position with a six-year term. The function of this office is to provide the town with an equitable assessment roll each year.
In that pursuit, there are a multitude of laws which must be followed:
The Assessment Roll must be filed in a timely manner in accordance with various State Laws, Rules and Regulations. This includes preparation and filing of all legal notices and notifications to property owners, as well as the Assessor’s Annual Report with NYS Office of Real Property Services.

What is the role of an assessor?
The Assessor is a Constitutional office in the Town of Lumberland, and is an appointed position with a six-year term. The function of this office is to provide the town with an equitable assessment roll each year.
In that pursuit, there are a multitude of laws which must be followed:
- Primarily, the Real Property Tax Law.
- The valuation of approximately 3,000 parcels in the town involves tracking each parcel as respects condition, construction, alterations and inventory items.
- The property owner’s taxes are then based on that value.
- The Assessor is present during Grievance Day, and prepares for all cases of appeals, including court cases.
- Another facet in the preparation of the roll is the administration of the various exemptions allowed by local and state government.
- The Assessor administers all forestry, Basic & Enhanced Star, Senior, Veteran and Not-For-Profit Exemption applications.
The Assessment Roll must be filed in a timely manner in accordance with various State Laws, Rules and Regulations. This includes preparation and filing of all legal notices and notifications to property owners, as well as the Assessor’s Annual Report with NYS Office of Real Property Services.
